‘With this exhibition, Pascal-Michel Dubois wryly returns to the machinery of his unfettered student existence, illuminating it through the tragicomic personage of ‘the Bachelor’, evoking ‘a remembrance of things past’ in terms of the shared isolation of young student life. Bachelor in this sense is a historical identity or role that fits men and women, a self-contained monastery cell for the supposedly studious, a costume for ‘the man about town’. It is a form of qualification, a cliché on the prowl. Dubois uses the French word ‘“Garçonnière” (Bachelor Pad), to describe this figure’s lair, home to the solitary force of contemporary nature that is the ideal unattached worker. Pascal-Michel Dubois works to stage the bachelor dream as a form of habitat, as a return of the mythical ‘Bachelor Machine’; a circumscribed nature in which separated partial objects circulate together as bit parts in half a drama. Rediscovered black & white photographs of his old Art School ‘cell’ become the score of a kind of orchestration in which various carefully crafted and found objects play together. Unwittingly reinterpreting an iconic scene from the classic 1960’s movie ‘The Apartment’ we find a video test screening of a young Dubois preparing a pasta dish … P-M Dubois a.k.a Jack Lemmon … All this almost adds up to something – to a some kind of questionable and elusive personage out of time. Such interwoven forms reinforce the ubiquitous sense of identity and purpose that Dubois partially lays out. He allows a surprisingly outlandish ‘Bachelor of Art’ strangeness to unfurl in and across time, creating the measure of an identifiable role without guarantee.’

Pascal-Michel Dubois is a French artist who has been living and working in the UK for over twenty-four years. He studied Visual Art at the School of Fine Art of Lyon (France) and at Goldsmith’s College Art Department (London). His three previous solo exhibitions have been in Welsh venues: the Joanna Fields Gallery, g39 Gallery and ArcadeCardiff Project. Dubois was Artist in Residence at the Wales Pavilion for the 2007 Biennale of Venice. Amongst other awards, Dubois became the recipient of the 2011“Welsh Artist of the Year” Printmaking Prize. Pascal-Michel Dubois regularly exhibits his work nationally & internationally and is represented by Gallery ten, Cardiff.
Phil King is a graduate of the Goldsmiths College M.A course. He’s exhibited in the UK and the USA and is the author of a number of catalogue essays on close peers. He recently showed at ArcadeCardiff. A translator he has recently completed a translation of Jean Genet’s book ‘Giacometti’s Studio’ and is developing lectures on art historical figures as well as on his own art.

Artist Ffrengig sydd wedi bod yn gweithio a byw yn y DU am dros pedwar-ar-hugain o flynyddoedd yw Pascal-Michel Dubois. Astudiodd Celf Gweledol yn Ysgol y Celfyddyd Gain yn Lyon (Ffrainc) ac yn Adran Gelf Coleg Goldsmiths (Llundain).
Mae ei dri arddangosfa cynt wedi bod yn safleoedd Cymreig: Oriel Joanna Fields, Oriel g39 a Phrosiect ArcadeCardiff. Bu Dubois yn Artist Preswyl ym mhafiliwn Cymru ar gyfer y Biennale yn Fenis 2007. Ymhlith gwobrau eraill, derbyniodd Dubois y Gwobr Printio fel “Artist Cymreig y Flwyddyn” 2011. Arddangosai Pascal-Michel Dubois yn gyson yn genedlaethol ac yn rhyngwladol ac mae’n cael ei gynrychioli gan oriel gallery/ten, Caerdydd.
Mae Phil King yn raddedig o cwrs M.A. Coleg Goldsmiths. Y mae wedi arddangos yn y DU ac UDA ac yn awdur o nifer o draethodau catalog ar gyfoedion agos. Yn ddiweddar, arddangosodd yn ArcadeCardiff. Fel cyfieithydd, yn ddiweddar y mae wedi cyflawni cyfieithiad o lyfr Jean Genet, ‘Giacometti’s Studio’ ac mae’n datblygu darlithiau ar ffigurau celf hanesyddol yn ogystal ac ar ei gelf ei hun.
