Some 69 photographers from all over the world have been shortlisted for this years’ ESPY photography award, one of Wales’s largest contemporary international photography exhibitions which returns once again to elysium gallery.
This year there are TWO £1000 awards for digital and analogue formats. The winners will be announced at the opening of the exhibition and will also receive solo exhibitions with elysium gallery in 2020.

The artists who span all the continents have been selected by Huw Alden Davies, Michal Iwanowski, the *kickplate*project and Shutter Hub. The work features a wide range of subject matters from documentaries of war torn countries to landscapes and portraiture, to experimental and more traditional approaches to photography.

‘Attracting a large degree of photographers this year, the greatest challenge for myself and all the judges of the espy photo award was the sheer number of submissions and giving every one of them the level of consideration they deserved. However, we have strived ourselves in giving everyone the best chance, selecting a broad range of work that we feel best reflects the vibrancy of todays’ photographic arena. And, as a practitioner and educator of the photographic medium it has been encouraging to witness such a positive and creative engagement in the field of photography’. ESPY 2019 Judge Huw Alden Davies

About the judges:

Huw Alden Davies is a celebrated documentary photographer whose work has been selected by renowned Magnum photographer Martin Parr, The Association of Photographers, and The National Museum of Wales. Supported by the Arts Council of Wales and Ffotogallery (the national agency of photography), Davies’ work has gone on to represent Wales internationally, including a recent visit to India as part the Ffotogallery delegation in Jaipur.

Michal Iwanowski is a Cardiff based artist and a current Ffotogallery tutor. His work has been exhibited and published worldwide, with the most recent shows in Poland and Wales. His first monograph ‘Clear of People’ was published by Brave Books in April 2017, and the book was nominated for the Deutsche Borse Photography Prize 2018.

The*kickplate*project started off as a pop-up gallery in a former barber shop in Wales and since 2013 has exhibited over 50 artists from 27 countries and 3 continents. Shutter Hub is a photography organisation providing opportunities, support and networking for creative photographers worldwide.

ESPY 2019 will include the launches of TWO other photography exhibitions. The 2019 ESPY Photography Award will take over the main Gallery One space. An exhibition ‘Reflections on Identity’ featuring a series of moving imagery by Morriston Hospital patients who have survived traumatic brain injuries will be in Gallery Two whilst Egyptian photographer Mohamed Hassan with his exhibition ‘Souls’ will be in Gallery Three. Swansea based photographer Shelly Hopkins will be displaying her series of images ‘The Art of borrowing, Tempting but Inconclusive’ in ‘Art in the Bar’.
