Lucia and Natasha talk about there latest exhibition ‘A world of her own’ currently on show at elysium gallery.

A world of her own is an exploratory exhibition by nature, a navigation of its namesake. Traversing mediums as well as the lived and the imagined, the artists meditate on the relationship between women and the environments in which they are depicted; one confronting, the other embracing.

Painted, digital and woven worlds are created and cross-examined within the show, offering glimpses into the seen, experienced and invented.

Jones’ work re-contextualises women from found imagery and cinematic sources, forming fractured and fabricated environments in which they can be used to examine memory and sense of self.

Morely’s works focuses on a series of realms in which women are immersed in their imagined surroundings, unbridled within their space and existing out of the confines of reality.

Natasha Morley

Natasha Morley graduated from Cardiff School of Art & Design in 2019 with a First Class BA Hons in Fine Art Practice. She currently works as a digital designer and lives in Pontypridd, Wales.

Her new body of work is an escape from the world around us. Outside of space and time her characters inhabit their own fantastical pocket universe evoking a sense of freedom. A love letter to women, life and living fearlessly.

Though primarily a digital artist this exploratory show pulls her illustrated women out of the screen and into one-of-a-kind fine art textiles. This marriage between two mediums embraces all the possibilities of modern technology while paying homage to a historically feminine art form.

Lucia Jones

Jones’s practice explores memory and perception of self through the constructs of paint and film. Primarily utilising cinematic source imagery from obscure 1950s-90s b-movies, she addresses the intangible nature of memory and the shifting impressions of lived moments.

Re-contextualising women from these sources, the paintings in this exhibition form a series of anonymised figures occupying fractured and fabricated environments. Liberated from their original medium and plains of existence, they are absorbed into the painted realm Jones has been developing throughout her oeuvre; their context reconstructed and their world shaped around them, they act as cyphers to the experienced – to be glimpsed and examined.

Lucia Jones is a painter based in Wales. Since graduating from Falmouth University in 2014, she has exhibited extensively throughout the UK in solo and group exhibitions including BEEP Painting Prize 2018. She has also been long listed for several painting prizes including John Moores2020 and Jackson’s Art Prize in 2022. Her work is currently held in private collections in Australia, Austria, Hong Kong, the UK and the USA.
