Artist and Paula MacArthur discusses her painting practice and her upcoming curated exhibition ‘Vitalistic Fantasies’ that will be part of this years Beep Painting Biennial in October.
Paula’s recent paintings explore the apparent geometry and imperfections in natural forms which in earlier works had been refined by the human hand. These natural forms however appear alien and unfamiliar and invite questions around the increasing disconnect between man and nature.
The title of the exhibition ‘Viutalistic Fantasies’ is taken from the introduction of Isabelle Graw’s 2018 book, The Love of Painting in which she argues that aliveness of paintings is created not only through the specific ways in which painters personalise their paintings by the traces of activity on the resulting work, but also through the projections of the viewer onto the painting.
The exhibition brings together members of Contemporary British Painting come together at the College Street Gallery in Swansea as part of the Beep Painting Biennial in an attempt to bring a visual conversation to Graw’s ideas and consider how her argument resonates within their own individual practices.
You can see Paula’s work at this years Beep Painting Prize exhibition at elysium gallery, Swansea 3rd Oct – 7th November & Vitalistic fantasies at College St Gallery runs from 3rd – 31st Oct
This elysium gallery & Beep Painting Biennial led event was made possible through funding from the @celfcymruarts & @nationallotterygoodcauses helping support artists and grass roots arts organisations during the COVID-19 pandemic.
