David Cameron and Barack Obama during a visit to Mount Pleasant Primary School in Newport, Wales

I am a Welsh artist who has lived in Swansea for 30 years. My work is an investigation into the construction (and deconstruction) of identity, with a particular focus on Welsh identity. This has manifested itself in the materials that are used, Welsh fabrics that are cut and torn and arranged on a mannequin. An oil painting, which is based on the red/black checked pattern that forms part of the female Welsh costume. Using Welsh clichés and stereotypes that construct a sense of ‘who we are’, these ‘constructs’ are mutated through the manipulation of the materials.
