IS THIS / THIS IS… Ally Jay Phillips

Event Details

  • Date:

Wednesday 2nd March 2016 – 7-9pm

Situated in the elysiumgallery High Street studios, the IS THIS/THIS IS test-bed space is primarily used by residency artists and the elysiumgallery studios community. The aim is to enable artists to work and experiment towards creating new work in an environment outside of their usual studio practice in preparation for critical discussions within the group. The space enables artists to develop, to build, to take risks, to test and to invite their peers to see the work in progress

Born in Swansea, Ally Jay Phillips pursued various academic disciplines prior to embarking on the Art Foundation Course at University of Wales Trinity Saint David. Graduating in 2015, specialising in fine art and ceramics, Ally’s practice seeks to incorporate her diverse educational background in a number of disciplines including ceramics, tapestry, drawing, painting and printmaking. Drawing on her academic background, Ally’s work is highly political and has been shown in several local exhibitions in Swansea. Her work is feminist in nature and is interested in the portrayal of femininity throughout history, from ancient fertility figures to how the female form is presented in contemporary society. What is sacred throughout these processes is the freedom to explore new ideas and skills while challenging the sexist stereotypes ever present in the modern world.

This event is open to members of elysiumgallery studios and guests. BYOB
