IS THIS THIS IS…. Sarah Poland
elysium Orchard street studios, 2nd Floor, 34a Orchard Street, Swansea
Weds 27th September, 7pm

Sarah Poland has been the latest Artist in residence at the IS THIS THIS IS Project space throughout September.

‘During a period of five years living off-grid, living with landscape in an oak woodland in west Wales, I made mostly paintings and some prints. It was a totally immersive experience and during this time I also created many mini-series of work about it – areas of my work that I have yet to develop. I made oak gall ink and also ‘moon drawings’ – digital photographs taken while night-walking, using a long exposure and the moon as a light source with which to draw.

This work is about exploring drawing through making and using oak gall ink as much as it is about the place and the experience of where they were found. I plan to use this time during the residency to explore and develop the juxtaposition of oak gall ink drawing with photographic moon drawings. I want to see how the two different mediums hang next to each other. I intend to print the photographs in silver gelatin, a process with a beautiful matt quality and sense of depth which will juxtapose the photography well with the drawings. try diptych format and collage techniques. For now, it is called ‘Night Watch’ (I work on titles and words simultaneously when making the work), and hopefully, I will create small finished works ready to hang’.

Situated in the elysium gallery Orchard Street studios, the project space is used on a monthly basis by selected residency artists and the elysium gallery studios community. The aim is to enable artists to work and experiment towards creating new work in an environment outside of their usual studio practice in preparation for critical discussions within the group. The space enables artists to develop, to build, to take risks, to test and to invite peers to see the work in progress.

Only members of elysium gallery studios and there guests are invited to these group discussions.
