Dave Long has been in residence at the IS THIS/THIS IS… Project space throughout September.
‘I work as a Mural artist and Illustrator, often for events; festivals, communities and organisations. The space has been key in breaking down some personal barriers, especially anxieties around that constant balance between the common misconception of ‘commercial’ and ‘fine’ art. I ran with a few suggested ideas and explored my surroundings for a little while, spent a lot of time contemplating, analysing loose marks and gestures that were spread liberally within the four walls. I don’t know where the completed piece has come from, nor do I know where it will take me. I enjoyed the sense of narrative and freedom that I could conjure on a whim, the undiluted joy from painting and storytelling with the same brush stroke’.
Situated in the elysiumgallery High Street studios, the IS THIS/THIS IS Project space is primarily used by residency artists and the elysiumgallery studios community. The aim is to enable artists to work and experiment towards creating new work in an environment outside of their usual studio practice in preparation for critical discussions within the group. The space enables artists to develop, to build, to take risks, to test and to invite peers to see the work in progress.
Members of elysiumgallery studios and their guests are invited to the latest of the elysium studios group discussions. Bring a bottle and carry on with the conversation in the pub afterwards.
