Art in the Bar – Euros Rowlands

Event Details

elysium gallery reopens its doors for the first time since April with our latest Art in the Bar artist, Euros Rowlands.

‘Born in 1971. After graduating in Art History from Aberystwyth University in 1992, I was a member of the band Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci until 2000, when I began teaching art and photography at Ysgol Gymraeg Ystalyfera in the Swansea Valley. I returned to painting in 2014 after an absence of 20 years, and have been based at Elysium Gallery and Studios, Swansea, since 2016.
Much of my work explores the fragile layers and dualities that exist in our relationship with others and with our own selves. These works are created through a combination of paint, photographs, magazines, and adverts, and attempt to unify disparate elements into a whole which has an emotional and intellectual resonance. I am interested in the process of memory, of the way remembering, forgetting, and imagining, combine to create a visual echo of what maybe once was. The works do not refer to a specific memory, but are an attempt to evoke the feeling of a vague and diminishing remembrance.
The series ‘and we’ll have sunshine’ is based on a day spent in Central London and Hackney in April, 2019, looking at the work of Bonnard and Early Renaissance Art, and watching the American band Lambchop in an old theatre with beautifully decaying walls interspersed with gold pipes, during a time of personal upheaval. Like frescoes with crumbling al secco, what was thought to be permanent has become dissolved, bringing forth the becoming of a new foundation, a new light’.
