Born in Israel & based in Wales since 2001, for her latest exhibition Dalit Leon will be exploring ideas around sense & cognitive perception, symbolic & material language, attempting to articulate the notion of a transcendent oneness.
Time Signatures is a new body of work which heralds a change of direction for the artist by introducing wool & processes of felting & spinning, integrating them into Dalit’s primary practice of painting. These new elements introduce another aspect of materiality & as consequence, a sensory language embodying elemental qualities, symbolic references & cultural context.
The central pursuit is in creating illusory spaces within & beyond the two dimensional surfaces and facilitating imaginative journeys therein. The artist’s ongoing interest is to further articulate this sense of oneness in various forms alluding to a metaphysical framework & the sense that consciousness is primary & intrinsically woven into the fabric of reality.
Leading up to & during the exhibition there will be a series of accompanied workshops exploring the interchangeability & overlapping of the sensory experience featured in the condition of synaesthesia. This is where (for instance) music can be experienced as colour & suggests a profound unitary source- a nexus of meaning which embodies a spectrum & is experienced as a refraction, employing polarities and variations as the essence of its oneness. The interactive workshops featuring artists and musicians will investigate this notion & work around the idea of a colour coding system for musical notes.
Before moving to Wales Dalit lived and studied art at The Hague & then completed her BA at Swansea College of Art in 2010 & an MA in painting at the Royal College of Art, London 2011-13. This was followed by her first solo exhibition at Oriel Q, Narberth & was a participating artist in the elysiumgallery led Colorado & Swansea artists exchange in 2014. Dalit was also recently the Osi Osmond drawing book prize winner at UWTSD Carmarthen & is also a regular guest lecturer at UWTSD in Swansea & Carmarthen.
Dalit will be talking about her practice and the exhibition on Saturday 4th June at 2pm. All welcome.
