Our visual world is born of line and structure.
Hazel Cardew’s practice is primarily concerned with drawing and the fundamental way in which we understand the spaces we inhabit. She explores this in minimal mark making and installation work.
She seeks to widen the boundaries of drawing, to create work that is not just viewed but experienced. Drawing underpins so much of our visual world and brings with it the potential to construct, communicate, and connect.
Hazel Cardew graduated in 2012 with first class honors from the University of Gloucestershire and won the Greenwich Decorative Fine Arts Society Award in 2011. She has been artist with Elysium studios for 3 years and in 2017 was invited to spend time in the studio project space, where her installation drawing works were first established. At the beginning of 2018 she completed a residency with the Glynn Vivian Gallery Swansea, and prior to this has exhibited work in the UK and abroad. Although having also explored photography and film, a strong interest in minimal drawing and mark making really drives the work.
This residency and exhibition will be the last activities at elysium gallery, 16 College Street before its grand reopening at 210 High street in April 2019.
