lysium gallery welcomes you to the latest of our series of online zoom artist talks.
DORIS GRAF is a German conceptual artist whose work explores social participation and questions of identity. Her work focuses on participatory projects such as the international series CityX, which has been realized in over 18 cities worldwide since 2012, including Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Havana, Maputo, Chicago, Pristina, and Tirana. The artist has exhibited numerous times at home and abroad and has received several awards, grants, and scholarships.
In 2014, she was awarded the “Digital Head of Germany” prize. Her works can be found in many public and private collections.
The artist Doris Graf is known for her participatory art projects CityX, which she carries out in numerous cities from Ulm to Rio de Janeiro to Maputo. In initial drawing sessions, she asks the residents of each city to express their connection to the place through drawing. The collected images are then organized by theme and motif and, with the help of computer programs, combined into pictographic images, similar to the way people draw.
“CityX – Me, Swansea” was created in cooperation with the people of Swansea. The drawing sessions took place in autumn 2024, during which Doris Graf collected over 500 images, later organised them thematically, and compiled them into ten pictograms. The results have already been shown at two locations in Germany: Galerie ABTART in Stuttgart and Abendakademie in Mannheim and now on display at elysium gallery.
