Elysium Gallery invites you to the latest of our series of special online zoom artist talks.
Fatoumata Diabaté talks about her latest exhibition at elysium gallery –
L’homme en objet / en animal et Nimissa
Fatoumata is a Malaian photographer who creates captivating, dreamlike portraits inspired by folklore and fairy tales from her child-hood.
Fatoumata is a Malian photographer from Bamako. She is particularly interested in the place of women in society, Fatoumata is president of the Association des Femmes Photographes du Mali. Her work has been exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions and she has been the recipient of several awards. In 2020 she was awarded the Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac, Prize for Photography in France.
Alongside L’homme en object et L’homme en animal, this exhibition in partnership with Ffotogallery premieres Nimissa (meaning regret in the Bambara language) in the UK. Through the common history of several women, who, like the artist, were victims of female genital mutilation (FGM), the images that make up Nemissa contribute to a process of reconstruction of a lost, stolen, female identity of an intimate self that has disappeared.
