Elysium are proud to present the first Tummler School to be held in Swansea.

Presented by Grow Social Capital (https://growsocialcapital.org.uk/), it is a brilliant opportunity to be part of a positive movement for change. As an organisation that fosters education and engagement between artists and communities to create positive social change, we are delighted to be able to bring an event to Swansea that broadens our potential impact.

What is a Tummler School? Tummler’ is a Yiddish word for someone who used to be employed to gets a party going in Yiddish speaking communities. Imagine you are hosting a party for a birthday, wedding, or Bar Mitzvah you would pay a Tummler to get the party started; to get people dancing, singing and the drinks flowing. The Tummler would then move onto the next party in the area and get that one going.

Now think about parties you’ve been to where despite the music playing, no-one is dancing. Eventually, a few might get on the dance floor, and then some more; but it can be slow going.

Grow Social Capital think it is a good job description for anyone who wants to make a difference in our communities, partnerships, and organisations: changemakers.

But getting the party started is one thing. The capacity of others must be built in order to sustain the party to carry on without them.

How can you be an effective Tummler and create the party you want to see in your world? One way is to meet and engage with other Tummlers – and this is your opportunity to do just that.

The event is free to attend and will be a taster insight to the Tummler methodology, and if there is appetite the full Tummler School will then be held in Swansea. GSC will host a workshop that looks at skills and capacity building of existing changemakers.

Tummler Schools have been held in Aberystwyth, Torfaen and Monmouthshire previously, and will be taking up residence in the communities of west Newport in the autumn in partnership with Dŵr Cymru | Welsh Water
