ExpressYourselF is a series of evenings of performance, art, dance, music, spoken word, magic, film, and durational performance.

Inspired by Performance ArT Happenings and Cabarets since Dada times – ExpressYourselF is a Newport based, artist led initiative with its feet deeply rooted in a DIY ethos; curated in a way that offers a wide ranging and varied platform of work and styles.

ExpressYourselF was first conceived in Le PuB in Newport – home to the alternative punk and indie scene with a strong DIY ethos. By putting Performance/art/ theatre/music and film into this setting meant ExpressYourselF not only giving artists a chance to show their work but also broadening the type of audience being exposed to cross art forms.

Using a Cabaret format, ExpressYourselF gives each Artiste up to 15 minutes to perform in whichever way they choose. Depending on the venue setting, durational pieces often run alongside the more staged events. Dancing plays a big part in an Express Yourself evening – so bring yer best moves!

For elysium Gallery, Mr & Mrs Clark will host a series of evenings which will include performance/art from Newport, Swansea and Cardiff based artists, as-well as work from further a-field. We are also very excited to be hosting Laberinto, by Peruvian dance company, Danza PUCP, choreographed by Lea Anderson founder of The Cholmondeleys.

There will be an exhibition curated by Upmarket Galleries featuring Newport based artists to accompany ExpressYourselF. The work will include painting, collage, printmaking, sculpture, photography.

As part of the ExpressYourselF season, the Clarks will be hosting workshops in developing your ideas as a performer. We will work together to support the seeds of ideas and offer constructive feedback and advise as to how to make your idea into an ExpressYourselF performance piece. Wear comfortable clothes; bring pen and paper, and most importantly- Bring an open mind! These will be held on the first three Saturdays in February

There will also be mentorship sessions held during the month’s residency.

Mr & Mrs Clark are regulars on the performance circuit creating their own theatre and cabaret shows to delight and provoke. They use music, dance and a dark slice of comedy to entice the viewer into a world of play and participation. Described as performance mavericks, the Clarks were nominated for the Amnesty Freedom of Expression Award for their show Smash It Up.

Upmarket Galleries originally based upstairs in Newport Market is a roaming collective that facilitates and promotes the work of Newport based artists.
