“Yellow, if steadily gazed at in any geometrical form, has a disturbing influence, and reveals in the colour an insistent, aggressive character” Kandinsky
Elysium Gallery presents the first solo exhibition by Swansea based artist Phillip Cheater.
Health and Safety artefacts have become prominent in the everyday environment, however these are generally taken for granted. Cheater’s new body of work develops an optical semiotics of institutional Health and Safety culture and satirises key elements by producing them on a monumental level.
Can something intended for our protection become a potential hazard?
The installations for this work have become site specific the use of vinyl tape allows the work to adapt to almost any space. Cheater’s experimentation with different types of tape has allowed the patterns and colours to create visually exhausting environments. This communicates the saturation of pattern and colours from Health and Safety. The juxtaposition of large-scale installations and small sign interventions create an interesting dialogue that exploits the different aspects of Health and Safety culture.
The particular pieces for Fickle Use Kills Intent use existing artefacts that are already prominent in society and have specific links to Health and Safety. Previous works by the artist have explored colour and pattern and these remain primary elements. In this exhibition the installations develop the language of the work by introducing text and forms that are inherent to everyday life.
Cheater is a recent graduate from Swansea Metropolitan University and is the current artist in residence. He has recently exhibited at Parallax AF- International Arts Fair and UKCPS in London, Inside – Blank Media Collective in Manchester and is a member of the RED DOOR 44 artist’s collective.
