The Penultimate Truth is a series of new landscape paintings that revisit various sites from the canon of art history. The new paintings are based on imagery gathered from the mega-simulacra of Google Earth and Google Maps. The locations depicted are the rocky peak featured in Friedrich’s Wanderer Above the Mist, rock formations of Cadaqués which feature in many Dali paintings, Crookhey Hall – the childhood home of Leonora Carrington which featured in her surrealist landscapes, and Mont Sainte Victoire – which Cezanne painted many times.

‘The work builds on a long running theme in my work – an exploration of the increasingly virtual and fictional nature of our visual culture and the use of painting to distil the latent aesthetics and meanings that we place in representations of landscape.

Typically, my work depicts a range of fictional worlds such as movie sets, museum dioramas, video games, history paintings and zoo habitats. They use the tropes of landscape genre painting as a method for critically exploring and questioning the mediated environment that make up our everyday life. I’m fascinated by the motives and meanings that inhabit the simulated worlds that we continually encounter’.
